Supporting Kinship Families Through Lived Experience

The Sunflowers are a group of kinship carers with lived experience of stepping in to care for children when their parents are unable to do so at that time.

Having walked or still walking the kinship care journey themselves, members of the group understand both the rewards and challenges that can come with being a kinship carer. They are passionate about making sure that kinship families are heard, valued and supported.

What Do the Sunflowers Do?

The Sunflowers help to:

• Shape and develop services and support for kinship families

• Share lived experiences to influence positive change

• Ensure the voices of kinship carers are heard

• Help build stronger support for children and families

• Work alongside professionals to improve services for kinship carers

Peer Support from People Who Understand

The group offers a welcoming and supportive space where kinship carers can connect with others who understand their experiences.

Through regular coffee morning drop-ins, kinship carers can:

• Meet other kinship families

• Share experiences and ideas

• Talk openly about challenges and successes

• Receive encouragement, understanding and support

• Access information and guidance in an informal setting

Support During Assessments

If you are considering becoming a kinship carer or are currently going through an assessment, the Sunflower Group can help by:

• Sharing their own experiences of the assessment process

• Offering reassurance and practical information

• Providing peer support and encouragement

• Helping you understand what to expect

• Ensuring you feel less alone throughout your journey
